Do Videos Slow Down My Website?

A lot of you ask, “Will adding a video to my website slow it down?”
Load time for a website is an important component and quality for a successful one.  Large images hosted on your server which are placed on your website can drag down load times for a webpage.  The same holds true with video.  However, there is an easy fix.
In order to avoid lag times in load speeds, utilize a third party site to host your videos.  This way your webhost space won’t be taken up by large video files.  Go to a site like Youtube.com.  They have robust platform in which to upload videos.  Learn how to upload a Youtube video here.  Once your video is on youtube, grab the embed code and place that snippet of code on your site (in the HTML of a blog post, or on the sidebar).  The video will then appear on your webpage but it will be hosted by Youtube.

Bonus: By opening a Youtube channel it will improve your SEO.

What is Keyword Stemming?

A lot of interest has surrounded the important keyword techniques.  Keyword stemming is one which has come up often in SEO conversations.

What is Keyword Stemming?

It is actually simple.  Keyword stemming is taking a keyword in its purest form and adding suffixes and/or prefixes to the word.  This way you can account for all forms of a word someone may use to find your website.

Example: party, partier, parties, partied, pre-party, post-party, partying

Top 3 Components for On-Page SEO Success

You hear SEO wherever you go.  Search engine optimization is important, the competition is growing everyday and everyone is fighting to stay on the top of the search engines for their categories.  We work with a number of organizations to help them with both their on-page SEO as well as in code SEO.  Here are our top 3 priorities for On-Page SEO.

1.  Page Titles –  Search Engine Spiders look at your titles.  If all of your website pages start with your company name, this will hurt you.  It is best to have your company name at the end of the title if it must be there.  The crawlers see the first few words as most prominent in a title.  Make the title specific to the page and make sure the keyword you want to be found for is in the title of that page (as long as the content on the page is about that keyword).  Titles should be no more than 75 characters long.

2.  Header Tags – These are more commonly known as “<h1> and <h2>” tags.  These appear as the subheaders or subtitles on a page.  If the main title of a page is “How to Ace Algebra,” the subheader or subtitle in the <h1> or <h2> tags might be “Step by Step Method to Solve a Quadratic Equation.”  Again, use keywords in the subtitles, but don’t just simply repeat what is in the title.  Search engines prefer each section is unique.

3.  Alt Text – Now this may seem like it is in code, and it is, but it is also on the page.  Have you ever visited a website and instead of seeing an image, a box shows up with an “x” in the corner.  Most often in that empty box you will see some text describing the picture.  If the designer did it correctly, the text will appear in that box, if not, nothing may appear.  Search engine spiders crawl pictures too and are able to help you appear in the search listings for terms associated with the Alt Text of your images.

If you want to learn how to add good keyword rich Alt Text to your images take our Alt Text course online now.

Do you want an SEO sweep through of your website but just don’t have the time to do so? We know it’s a lot of work, so let us take care of this for you!

Google Front Page : Don’t Let This Happen To You!

Something has come to our attention that we feel everyone should know.  All businesses who want to market themselves online are very interested in getting their website listed on Google.  This is important to do, however there are legal and illegal ways of doing so.  When you submit your website to Google, there is no real telling how fast it will end up on the first page of Google.  If you input all the proper SEO work, keyword research and meta tags, you have all the proper pieces of the puzzle to get you there.  However, there are companies out there promising you that you will get to the first page of Google easily.  They are listing businesses like yours under false pretenses just to get them found for the particular city they want to cater to, etc.  When Google realizes this is happening, they will remove all your listings because it is against the TOS (Terms of Service).  The only legal way to get yourself listed is to input all the proper SEO work like we mentioned earlier and/or to buy pay per click advertising spots.

If you get a call from one of these companies claiming to do this for you, beware.  Proceed with caution!

The New Google Scam

As a business owner you want as much exposure in the right spots online as possible. Local businesses are happy to see that the worldwide search engine is working harder to help them have some more exposure in the local market. That’s great, when done right. However, there is a new scam out there and we want you to be aware of it.

There are people out there claiming to be from “411” or some other type of directory service who will take your business and get it on the front page for any town of your choice on Google.com. For example, let’s say you have a salon in Stamford, Connecticut and you want it to be on the front page of Google’s search results for “Greenwich, Connecticut.” While this can be done, legitimately, it can also be done illegally.

These 411 scam artists will take your business, create a fake address in Greenwich, Connecticut and put you in the system. Now your business will come up with a Greenwich address. That’s not so bad, right?? WRONG. It is against Google’s specific Terms of Service to falsify an address. If you do this, Google will delete your company from their search results.

Not only do these scam artists hurt your business majorly by taking you off the #1 search engine people use, but they have also been known to collect your credit card number from you and continually charge your card even after you request they stop. BEWARE! This can really damage your business online.

If you have any questions, or are wondering if you might be dealing with something like this, contact us and we’ll try to steer you in the right direction.
